BIODATA :

Nelson Mandela or his real name Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in Mvezo where a small village of the Mbashe River in Umtata. It was the capital city of Transkei (nowdays it known as Eastern Cape) in South Africa. His father, Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela is the head of the village and family members of Thembu tribe who speak Xhosa. While his mother is called Nonqaphi Nosekeni. As a boy, Nelson Mandela grew in the protection of elders and tribal leaders who made him love African heritage.

HISTORY :

He was completed his secondary school at the Healdtown Methodist Boarding School and got a bachelor's degree in business at Fort Hare University. He did not complete his studies for joining student protests. As a member of the Student Representative Council (SRC), he and his late Oliver Tambo have opposed apartheid with a student strike even though he was eventually thrown out of the university in 1940. After that, he decided to run away to Johannesburg. There, he worked as a security guard and then became a land agent. Then, he continued study in a distance education program at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Johannesburg. After got a degree in business, he enrolled in the LLB (Bachelor of Law) program at the University of Witwatersrand.


He retreated in 1999 after a post as president. However, he continues to work on the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund established in 1995. In addition, he also established the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Rhodes Mandela Foundation. On 5 December 2013 at the age of 95, he died at his home in Johannesburg, South Africa. Mandela was actively involved in anti-apartheid movements and joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1942. In 1944, he was formed the African National Youth League (ANC Youth League), where the activity program was set by the ANC party in 1949 . The movement aims to achieve full citizenship policy, land redistribution, union rights, and free education as well as mandatory for all children. For 20 years, Mandela directed peaceful, nonviolent action, against the South African government and its racial policy. He was appointed National Volunteer Head for a program known as the Defiance Campaign in 1952. He has been exploring a country in sparking opposition to apartheid laws. At the same year, Mandela with Tambo set up the first black law firm in South Africa, with the aim to help the oppressed black people.

When he was 77 years old, Nelson Mandela was elected the first black President of South Africa from 27 April 1994 until 14 Jun 1999. He worked to realize the transition from minority and apartheid rules to black majority rule. On his 80th birthday, he was married with Graca Machel, who would accompany him to the end of his life in 2013.
